Study Explores Psychedelic Drug Psilocybin As Relief For Chronic Lower Back Pain
Researchers at the University of Virginia (UVA) are investigating whether psilocybin, a psychedelic compound derived from “magic mushrooms,” can alleviate chronic lower back pain, a significant global health issue. At AmeriWell Clinics, our Tysons, VA, back pain doctor remains on the forefront of emerging techniques, both surgical and non-surgical, to treat pack pain for our clients like you.
Patrick Finan, co-principal investigator and the Harold Carron Professor of Anesthesiology at UVA, emphasized the urgency of the problem. “Chronic lower back pain is becoming increasingly prevalent, especially as people age and medical advancements allow for longer active lives.”
Psilocybin, sourced from the Psilocybe mushroom genus, has long been classified by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as having high abuse potential and no accepted medical use. However, recent studies suggest its efficacy in treating depression, which often accompanies chronic pain. “The effects of psilocybin on depression have been striking,” Finan noted. “They often outperform traditional pharmaceutical interventions.”
This research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is a collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, where Finan previously worked. The trials will take place at the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins.
Finan explained that chronic pain can be complex and challenging to treat. “In cases of chronic lower back pain, MRIs may show clear issues in the spine, but often patients report significant pain without visible pathology,” he said. This disconnect suggests that pain can persist due to “sensitization” in the central nervous system, where neurons remain active long after an injury.
The study, approved by the FDA and the Institutional Review Board, aims to enroll 40 patients in February, splitting them into two groups: one receiving psilocybin and the other a placebo. While Finan is optimistic about the potential benefits, he cautions against unsupervised use of psilocybin. “Patients should avoid self-administration. It’s essential to proceed under medical supervision,” he stressed.
Other Non-Surgical Interventions For Back Pain Provided By Our Chiropractic Office
Back pain is a common ailment that affects millions worldwide, often leading to decreased quality of life. Fortunately, numerous non-surgical interventions can effectively alleviate pain and improve function. Our chiropractors may recommend one or more of these techniques to complement your chiropractor
- Physical Therapy: A personalized physical therapy program can strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and enhance posture. Therapists often use techniques such as manual therapy, exercise, and education to help patients manage their pain.
- Medication: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can provide temporary relief. For chronic pain, doctors may prescribe stronger medications or muscle relaxants. Topical treatments, including creams or patches, can also be effective.
- Chiropractic Care: Chiropractors use spinal manipulation and other manual techniques to relieve pain and restore mobility. Many patients find relief through regular adjustments.
- Acupuncture: This ancient Chinese practice involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. Research suggests acupuncture may help reduce back pain by promoting blood flow and releasing endorphins.
- Massage Therapy: Therapeutic massage can alleviate tension and improve circulation, helping to relieve muscle tightness and pain.
- Lifestyle Modifications: Weight management, ergonomic adjustments at work, and regular exercise can significantly impact back health. Engaging in low-impact activities like walking, swimming, or yoga can strengthen the back without strain.
